garden design service

We consider garden design to be both a stimulating and challenging part of our work, and have developed a consistent level of high quality detailed design and implementation.

We can offer all or part of a 6-stage design and contract supervision service covering everything from an initial consultation through development of the design to completion of the final scheme.

This process is flexible and can be tailored to your requirements

Stage 1 - Initial Consultation

The first step is for us to meet you at the site, and establish your own aspirations and offer design ideas. This will then be followed up with a written brief and a suggested budget. We will also tell you how we will charge for each stage of the design – Survey, Sketch Masterplan, Planning Applications (if required), Detailed Drawings and Specifications, Tendering and finally, Administration and Supervision of the Contract through to completion.

The first hour of the Initial Consultation is free.

Stage 2 - Survey

To progress to the Sketch Design stage, a topographical survey of your garden will be required. This is essential to allow us to take into account any existing structures, trees/plants, level changes etc that may alter the design if not accurately recorded. We can arrange for the survey to be undertaken with the surveyor employed directly by you.

Stage 3 - Sketch Design

After receipt of the survey, a Sketch Design will be drawn up based on the written brief. The scheme will include plans and if appropriate moodboards and hand drawn perspectives to give you a clear understanding of how the finished garden will look.

We can then arrange a further appointment to present the drawings, answer any questions that may arise from the design, and advise on cost.

Stage 4 - Detailed Drawings and Specifications

Once the Sketch Design is agreed we can develop the scheme to the level of detail needed for tender and construction. This will normally involve the preparation of hard landscape plans and details, planting plans, and written specifications.

Depending on the size and complexity of the work we can charge for this in two ways, either: 1) Calculated as a percentage of the final construction cost (in accordance with the Landscape Institute’s current Fee Guidance) or 2) agree a fee for specific drawings or documentation. In either case we will give you a clear indication of fees for your approval before we commence this stage.

Stage 5 - Tendering

Once the Detailed Drawings and Specifications are ready and approved we will seek competitive tenders from at least three contractors.

Once the tenders have been submitted we will report back to you and if necessary arrange an appointment to discuss the quotations and advise on which contractor would be most suitable to your project. We will then arrange a pre-start meeting with the contractor to agree details and sign the documents.

Stage 6 - Construction and Planting

For most projects we provide a full contract administration and supervision service through to Practical Completion and Final Handover. During this stage we will attend site to approve setting out, check completed work, issue instructions, provide additional information and approve invoices for payment. On larger projects the service includes regular formal site meetings.

Some clients choose to supervise the contract themselves – however we always advise such clients that we are available for advice on the end of the phone or on site, and can normally visit at short notice. We charge for this service on a time + expenses basis.

For those who have the resources to do their own planting, we can arrange the supply of plants and sundries from wholesale nurseries and help with setting them out on site.
